Great picture of Hurricane Ivan, which finally made its way to the north-east last night. There were a couple of long rain breaks during the Yankees/Red Sox game in the Bronx which meant that it didn't finish until after midnight. Really exciting game, particularly given how close the two teams are in the American League East. The Red Sox took it 3-2, scoring two runs in the ninth to turn the tables. Boston are now only 2.5 games behind the Yankees, making their series of games (Saturday and Sunday) all the more important.
The storms carried on through the night, with some severe lightning storms over Manhattan this morning. Things are brightening up now (why the "e" in brightening, but none in lightning?). The outlook after today is pretty good.
Each of the major news stations has its own dedicated weather presenter who is treated as a minor celebrity; this status is probably heightened by the weather that Florida et al. have been suffering over the last few weeks. Each has their own name for their forecast (e.g. Big G.'s outlook), suggesting that more credibility can be given to the details.
The football season has now started too, which gets much more intense focus by the media than baseball. The Giants went down to the Eagles at the weekend, and for the first time I can remember, the Jets start out the season more promising than do the Giants - they beat the Bengals. The Broncos (my team) enjoyed a win over the Chiefs putting them at the top of the AFC West. Only 16 weeks to go. This weekend, the Giants host the Redskins (getting a lot of coverage) while the Jets go to San Diego.
All settled in the new apartment now, with the furniture and homewares delivered and cable connected. The wireless is now our own (as opposed to ligging off others' networks) and is working wonderfully. We'll be headed home to the UK on 4 October for two weeks to sort out our visas, so hopefully catch up with some people then.
